OCTOBER

There will be a meeting of the Camp on Wednesday, October 29th, 7PM  at the Hillsborough Police Department.

NOVEMBER

Members of the Major General Benjamin F. Butler Society will hold their annual ceremony on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hildreth Family Cemetery , 280 Hildreth Street,  Lowell , Massachusetts.  The rain date will be Sunday, November 2nd at 2:00 p.m.   The speaker will be Professor Michael Pierson of Chelmsford , Professor of History at University of Mass Lowell .

The ceremony, which is open to the public, is held annually on the weekend nearest to General Butler's birthday which is November 5th.  This is one of the very few times this locked family cemetery is open to the public.   Noted Civil War Major General Adelbert Ames of the 20th Maine who married General Butler's daughter, Blanche, is also interred in Hildreth Family Cemetery.

The Society was formed four years ago by Benjamin F. Emerick of Uxbridge Massachusetts, a devoted fan of General Butler.  This year's ceremony will be dedicated to Mr. Emerick who passed away in May of 2008.  The Society replaces the American flag which flies in the Cemetery annually as a gift to the General for his birthday.

Re-enactors in uniform and ladies in period attire will be present.  A rifle salute will be given with reproduction period muskets.

Those interested in the Civil War, Lowell History, and local heroes are cordially invited to attend.  For more information contact Ellsworth and Cynthia Brown at  cynauxsuv@aol.com or (603-870-0043).
